Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas? Do Now- with a partner How is the race to the New World going to alter Europe? (S.P.E.R.M) Socially Social class mobility easier Spreads out population “Western World” Culture becomes dominant Politically Increases power of kings/ Rise of empires Desire to increase pop/land Economically Commercial banking/ reliance on $$$ over barter Europe becomes world power, supplanting Asia/Mid-East International trade Start of industrialism due to abundance of new natural resources Religion Catholic vs. Protestant tension increases “outside” sects see opportunity to have place of their own Military Conflicts among European countries Large shift in importance of navy (English domination starts here!!) Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas? Spain Where? In the beginning everywhere, but mainly Florida and S. America, and everything west of Miss. River 1st to set up colonial system Large population Encomiendas Royal grants of land to individuals Large scale plantations Sugar cane/rice Large amounts of slave labor (at first, the natives) Missionaries… Why? Consolidate society Christianizing the “savages” has its perks..? Keeps order and control in society!! Passive religion… Jesus doesn’t hit back!!!!
