Home safety/security tips Exterior Case your own home at night and during the day.

Locks & Windows Deadbolt locks are the most durable. Make sure you lock the entry door from your garage to the home interior Lock the screen door to provide a barrier between you and solicitors Lock windows on ground and second level Consider a double cylinder lock for doors that have side windows Consider calling out “Who is it?” for unannounced visitors or delivery personnel

Reduction strategies….. Interior Invest in thick or heavy fabric style drapes. Close blinds at night Prevent silhouetting

Reduction strategies Exterior lighting Around doors and corners of the residence and out buildings Parking areas Motion detectors Ground lights Timers

Reduction strategies Shrubs & Bushes… Trimmed at a consistent shape 6” below ledge of windows Remove large bushes/shrubs near doorways Plant roses or thorny bushes below ground floor windows

Reduction strategies Do you have a spare key hid outside? Is it hid in one of these? Leave a key with a trusted neighbor or family member!

Reduction strategies When your out of town for a while… Leave on the TV or some lights. Invest in a timer Have a trusted friend alternate lights Stop mail delivery or have a trusted friend collect it for you. If there are any vehicles alternate where they are parked If you notice anything out of the ordinary call 911!!

Reduction strategies Your Vehicle… Give it a visual check inside and underneath Lock the doors once inside If you think you are being followed go to a police station, fire, ems building or the emergency room. Also, 24 hour stores that are well lit. Park in well lit areas. If a large van or truck is parked next to your vehicle go back inside and ask for an escort or assistance. Have your keys ready! Walk with your head up and with confidence.

Reduction strategies Social Media… Use caution and know how to set restrictions on info Avoid posting locations If selling items do not list your address Don’t have potential buyers come to your residence. Meet at an agreed location If you mention a law enforcement agency and they quickly refuse…red flag!!
