Lesson 1 Abiotic and Biotic Factors in Ecosystems
Each biome is divided into smaller regions called ecosystems.
Ecology Define the following: Community: Population: Ecosystem:
Relationships in ecosystems
Ecological Succession
What is an Ecosystem? Ecology is the study of the interactions of living organisms with one another and with their physical environment.
Biodiversity -Biodiversity refers to the collective variety of living organisms in an ecosystem -an ecosystem is the collection of biotic and abiotic components.
1.2 Ecosystems Ecosystem – a part of a biome where abiotic factors interact with biotic components Can be many hectares of land, or the size of an old.

IMPACT OF HUMANS AND NATURE ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND ITS ECOSYSTEMS

ECOSYSTEMS: Who are the players? Remember that there are BIOTIC and ABIOTIC components in an ecosystem The BIOTIC components affect each other, and they affect the ABIOTIC components The ABIOTIC components affect each other, and they affect the BIOTIC components

EXAMPLES OF ECOSYSTEMS: A LOG A FOREST

ECOSYSTEMS ARE ALWAYS CHANGING HUMANS AFFECT THE BALANCE WITHIN ECOSYSTEMS Biotic and Biotic relationships change Biotic and Abiotic relationships change Abiotic and Abiotic relationships change NATURE AFFECTS THE BALANCE WITHIN ECOSYSTEMS

HOW DO OUR BUILDINGS/HOUSES AFFECT THE BALANCE WITHIN AN ECOSYSTEM? BEFORE AFTER

HOW DOES OUR TECHNOLOGY AFFECT THE BALANCE WITHIN AN ECOSYSTEM?

HOW DOES OUR WASTE AFFECT THE BALANCE WITHIN AN ECOSYSTEM?

HOW DOES NATURE AFFECT THE BALANCE WITHIN AN ECOSYSTEM FOREST FIRES DROUGHTS INFESTATION OF INVASIVE SPECIES HURRICANES ETC.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF: WHAT WAS THE ECOSYSTEM LIKE BEFORE? WHAT IS THE ECOSYSTEM LIKE NOW? HAS THE BALANCE CHANGED? ARE THERE TOO MANY OR TOO LITTLE OF ANY BIOTIC COMPONENTS? ARE THERE TOO MANY OR TOO LITTLE OF ANY ABIOTIC COMPONENTS? HAVE ANY OF THE BIOTIC OR ABIOTIC COMPONENTS BEEN ELIMINATED? IF ANY OF THE BIOTIC OR ABIOTIC COMPONENTS HAVE MOVED TO ANOTHER ECOSYSTEM, WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE BALANCE WITHIN THAT ECOSYSTEM? ARE THE CHANGES WITHIN THE ECOSYSTEM SUSTAINABLE (will it last)?
