What is copyright? Copyright: Defined by Meriam- webster’s dictionary as the legal right to be the only one to reproduce, publish, and sell a book, musical recording, etc., for a certain period of time

What kind of materials are copyrighted? Literary works (books, magazines, poems, news articles, etc. including computer software) Musical works Dramatic works Choreographic works Images, graphics, sculptures and other artworks Music and sound recordings Videos and other audiovisual works

What isn’t copyrighted?   Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, (but written or recorded descriptions, explanations, or illustrations are protected by copyright) Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans (but these could be trademarked) Works that are not fixed in a tangible form of expression, such as an improvised speech or performance that is not written down or recorded Works consisting of information that is commonly available Works by the Us government

What is fair use? Fair use: Allows a limited number of copying for educational and research purposes The copyright law provides that reproduction "for purposes such as criticism, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research" is not an infringement of copyright.

Can I use copyrighted images and media for my computer projects? In computer class we will focus on using images and media that are not copyrighted because we will be creating our own original work. If we want to use a copyrighted image, you must cite where you got your image from.

What is the public domain? Public domain: the state of something that is not owned by a particular person or company and is available for anyone to use

Where do I go to find material in the public domain? You can search on creative commons search on a variety of sites-- search.creativecommons.org In google image search, change your search options to “labeled for reuse”

How long does copyright last? Copyright protection lasts from the moment the work is created until 70 years after the death of the author/artist.
