The Flood Hazard Research Centre Middlesex University, London Loraine McFadden The Flood Hazard Research Centre Middlesex University, London Established in 1972 World leader in the socio-economic analysis of flood hazard and related policy L.McFadden@mdx.ac.uk http://www.mdx.ac.uk/research/areas/geography/flood-hazard/index.aspx A small group of interdisciplinary researchers

What do we do? Since 1970s we have specialised in research on the interaction between people and the environment, together with the analysis and appraisal of environmental policies Our aim is to develop our understanding of the relations between people, water and the environment, in order to reduce risks, strengthen resilience and improve policies for current and future generations The core concerns are: how we can make ‘better’ decisions in managing water and how then can those decisions be implemented? (water: catchment to coast) We are interested in range of themes including: vulnerability reduction and capacity building, social learning, governance and decision making

Selection of Recent Projects ENSURE: Enhancing resilience of communities and territories facing natural and na-tech hazards (FP7) CapHaz-Net: Social Capacity Building for Natural Hazards Toward More Resilient Communities (FP7) CONHAZ: costs of natural hazards (FP7) THESEUS: innovative technologies for safer European coasts in a changing climate EPI-WATER: effectiveness and the efficiency of Economic Policy Instruments in achieving water policy goals (FP7) FP6: SPICOSA and SWITCH and FLOODsite Distributional Consequences of Flood Risk Management Foresight Future Flooding (Office of Science & Technology, (UK Flagship) Thames Estuary 2100 Project (UK Flagship) Flood Risk Management Research Consortium (FRMRC) Pluvial flood forecasting
