What is an atom ? Smallest unit of matter. Atoms combine together to form molecules Atoms are made of subatomic particles: Protons Neutrons Electrons.
Isotope: Same element (same number of protons) but with different number of neutrons. Same # of Protons Different amount of Neutrons We know these are.
CHEMICAL BONDS. IONIC BONDS  Form when electrons are completely transferred from one atom to another. Atoms are electrically neutral.  Charged particles.

Atomic Number The number of protons in an atom Also, the number of electrons in a neutral atom.
Ion a particle that is electrically charged (positive or negative); an atom or molecule or group that has lost or gained one or more electrons Ions DO.
Ions When atoms lose or gain electrons. Proton = + charge Neutron = neutral charge Electron = - charge Structure of an Atom.

Lesson Objective: Describing how an atom can be changed and what it changes into Do Now :  How do you think an atom can be changed?(SILENTLY AND INDEPENDENTLY, 5 POINTS)

Changes to an Atom

Adding Atoms

Molecules An atom that is _____________________ with one or more other atoms. chemically bonded H2 + =

Atoms want to be complete. Cl Na A sodium atom needs _______ electrons to complete its last shell. A chlorine atom needs _______ electron to complete its last shell. 7 1

MESSING WITH THE ELECTRONS

MESSING WITH THE ELECTRONS SO LETS ADD AN ELECTRON AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. CHLORINE NEEDS ONE MORE VALENCE ELECTRON! CHLORINE ATOM

More electrons then protons. Ions An atom that carries a positive or negative electric charge as a result of having _____________________one or more electrons. lost or gained = ANION (NEGATIVE ION) + 1 ELECTRON 17 Protons 18 Electrons More electrons then protons. CHLORINE ATOM

WHAT IF I TAKE AWAY AN ELECTRON SODIUM ONLY HAS ONE VALENCE ELECTRON AND DOESN’T NEED IT. SO LETS GET RID OF THAT ELECTRON AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. SODIUM ATOM

More protons then electrons. Ions An atom that carries a positive or negative electric charge as a result of having lost or gained one or more electrons. _ = CATION (POSITIVE ION) 1 ELECTRON 10 Electrons 11 Protons SODIUM ATOM More protons then electrons.

Review Atom Cation Anion (+) (-) Loss of electron(s) Gain of electron(s) Cation (+) Anion (-)

MESSING WITH THE NEUTRONS

Adding an Neutron Lets take a carbon atom. Carbon has 6 Electrons 6 Protons 6 Neutrons This would be classified as Carbon-12 We’re going to focus on the amount of neutrons.

Isotope Proton- 6 Proton- 6 Electron- 6 Electron- 6 Neutron- 6 Versions of an element that have the same number of protons, but different numbers of neutrons. Carbon C-13 Carbon C-12 Proton- 6 Electron- 6 Neutron- 6 Proton- 6 Electron- 6 Neutron- 7 Gains 1 neutron

Some elements have more then one isotope Carbon C-14 Carbon Proton- 6 Electron- 6 Neutron- 6 Proton- 6 Electron- 6 Neutron- 8 Gains 2 neutron

But what about changing those protons…… What do we know so far….. Changing the amount of electrons causes the atom to become an _________________ Changing the amount of Neutrons causes the atom to become An ___________________ Ion Isotope But what about changing those protons……

A Hydrogen Atom has only 1 Proton. Elements Every element has an atomic number. This atomic number says the amount of protons that atom has. 1 H A Hydrogen Atom has only 1 Proton. Hydrogen 1.008 Lets give Hydrogen another Proton and see what happens……

He H + Lets give Hydrogen another Proton and see what happens…… 1 2 NOW BECOMES HELEIUM 1 PROTON Hydrogen Helium 1.008 4.002 Changing the atomic number, changes the element.
