Reading Session 3: EPIC Analysis This is to help you get better feedback on your papers from teachers/professors on what you’re saying about evidence

What you are doing today… Working in same groups as Final Word… You’ll be introduced to new tool for analysis of text You’re doing this to get ready for BIG discussion on the readings  you need to analyze readings quite well before we talk You’ll practice using this tool and reflect on how it works for you What you are doing today…

What does analyze a “text” mean to you? Preamble: Give a one sentence description of what it means to analyze How have you analyzed text in the past? What has been a challenge for you? Empire you decide who speaks first Discuss for 1 min each. Jedis you manage the time please What does analyze a “text” mean to you?

Letting you just dive in quickly into the work Quick review of what EPIC is and how to use it The Acronym: E  Explain the author’s argument(s) P Pick IT apart (pieces) [closer look at the evidence] C Comment about the argument and evidence(s) *Quick Hint: You’ll be WRITING this way when we get to the writing part of the class Letting you just dive in quickly into the work

How this helps your writing… For paragraph structure you’ve been using TIEAC Biggest struggle is the A- Analysis Zoom In: Analysis  Use EPIC to help break down the analysis. 12th Grade Difference is how and where you use TIEAC Ex: TIEAIEAIEAC Big Picture 10 Page MLA Research paper 2nd semester Econ Final How this helps your writing…

Allow me to demonstrate… Sample random text- I will attempt to use the tool to extract (take out) the author’s claim and evidence(s) on whether or not smoking is good for us. Allow me to demonstrate…

Debrief of my work What was I doing as I read? How did I manipulate (change) the way the data was presented? Why was this useful? How did I know where info was? (i.e. main argument) Anything I could have done to improve… Debrief of my work

Step 1: Facilitators- manage EPIC tool for the 4 readings Step 2: Timekeepers – 10 mins per reading Step 3: Reporters- you will report out to floor with argument(s) and 2 pieces of evidence to discuss Step 4: Everyone adds to their sheet as reporters are speaking How this works today…

Use this tool for the last two readings you didn’t get to last session This requires lots of conversation and attention. Facilitator from last session, you’re playing an important role today. Keep your peeps in focus Goal is to get through all 4 readings today Questions, concerns, thoughts, Prayers? Recommendations

What we are doing after this… Once you are done with the readings using the Tool… Pick ONE reading that you had the most struggle with as a group Find ANOTHER group with the same struggle and combine forces Talk to each other about those struggles with the evidence use the next slide as a guide What we are doing after this…

Debrief of Analysis #1 Explain the author’s claim(s) in your own words #2 Pick it Apart (Evidence used) #3 Comment (What do you have to say about it?) Debrief of Analysis

Take aways from this session… Option 1: Reflect on what aspects of this tool were useful for you to start analyzing any author’s claim and evidence. Option 2: Reflect on how you can use this approach to help with your own writing when you are asked to analyze author’s claims and evidence Take aways from this session…
