Descriptive Writing Description: When you write a descriptive paragraph, you are describing something. When you do this, you must use wording that will allow your readers to be able to see what you are writing about without being able to actually "see" it.

What is it? In a descriptive paragraph, The types of words to use are strong verbs and colorful adjectives. Verbs are action words such as run, leap, shout, and fly. Adjectives are words that describe nouns. Examples of colorful adjectives are: smelly, disgusting, gorgeous, radiant, brilliant, and gigantic.

More… Here are some sentences using strong verbs and colorful adjectives. The verbs are in red and the adjectives are blue. The petite young girl merrily skipped around the blossoming, fragrant bushes. A strong, putrid odor flowed through the musty air outside the garbage dumpster. Notice that both of these sentences allow the reader to see (and even smell) what is going on.

Example: The explosion of color and action in NFL Blitz enthralled the students of Mr. Henderson’s class. Sitting on the edge of their seats, the students huddled in a semi circle, their eyes glued to the glow of the television. With the push of a button and a beep of approval the players select plays and them the game begins. Unlike regular football, Blitz allows the players to suplex, elbow drop, and powerbomb each other in a flurry of action; whooping as they trash talk. The explosive offense and smothering defense wins the day. The vibrating rumble of the rumble packs indicate a particularly scorching hit. To the victor the sweet taste of victory, to the loser the sour bitterness of defeat.
