What is a dependent and independent clause? Fragments and Run-Ons What is a dependent and independent clause?

Definitions Clause: a group of words that has a subject and a verb. It can sometimes function by itself as a sentence, or be only part of a sentence.

Definitions Dependent Clause (subordinate): has a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought. It can NOT stand alone as a sentence. Ex: When the bell rang, the students had to remain seated. Students that remain seated get to leave on time.

Definitions Independent Clause (main): has a subject and a verb and expresses and complete thought. It CAN stand alone as a sentence. Ex: When the bell rang, the students had to remain seated. Students that remain seated get to leave on time.

Practice Underline the dependent clause. Because Liz was out past curfew, she was grounded for two weeks. Maggie read the book, while Brandon slept in class on Fridays. Underline the independent clause. Braden and his friend ditched RAO which landed them in IP. If Emily is willing to give up social time on Thursday, she can repair her grade in class.
