35 Complex and Compound-Complex Sentences A dependent clause does not present a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence. Complex sentences have one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. The independent and dependent clauses are connected with a subordinate conjunction or a relative clause. The dependent clause can be anywhere in the sentence. EX. You can sense sound because your inner ear contains tiny bones. EX. The Sydney Opera House, which was designed by architect Jorn Utzon, is a famous landmark. A compound-complex sentence is made from two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. EX. Although I like to go camping, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found anyone to go with.
