Everything you wanted to know about Florida’s Geography!

What is a Peninsula? A Peninsula is a piece of land that is bordered on three sides but connected to mainland.

Relative Location The state of Florida is positioned in both the northern and western hemispheres. Florida is bordered by the states Alabama and Georgia.

Florida’s nickname: the sunshine state Florida’s state bird: the mocking bird Florida’s state animal: Florida Panther The capital of Florida: Tallahassee Florida’s state flower: Orange Blossom Florida’s State Tree: Sabal Palm Florida became a state on: March 3, 1845.

Physical Characteristics The Florida peninsula is made up of four main land regions: the coastal plains, the uplands, the Everglades, and the Florida Keys. A variety of water features found across these regions include marshes, rivers, lakes, springs, swamps, and ponds.

Human Characteristics Human characteristics is something that is made by humans. Examples include buildings, cities, houses, and Disney World (which is the number one tourist destination in the world) !

What is the Environment like in Florida? The environment in Florida is what draws people to settle here. Florida possesses an array of land and marine life. Florida is also veined with water-filled caves and sinkholes.

What is a sinkhole? A sink hole is a natural depression or hole in the earth's surface caused by water erosion. They are formed especially where the earth surface is made of limestone or any other carbonate rock. Water dissolves these rocks making the land above heavy and eventually making it collapse to form a sink hole.

The Everglades The Everglades are located in the southern portion of Florida. The Everglades are shaped by fire and water, experiencing flooding in the wet season and drought in the dry season. The Everglades is home to a vast selection of plants and animals that have adapted to a wet environment.

Key Regions of Florida. There are eight key regions of Florida. Northwest region North Central region Northeast region East Central region Tampa Bay region Southwest region South Central region Southeast region
