Leadership and Management Msc in Management Aviation Leadership November 21st 2015 Andy Mac Intyre

Lecture Goal To provide students with knowledge of Leadership and Management communications principles and skills and how to apply them in a practical scenario

Communication Principles Clarity : Take something complex and make it simple in order to reach audiences at different levels. Trustworthiness: If people are unsure whether they can trust someone, they are less likely to want to embrace the leader’s vision and direction Transparency: There are no hidden agendas or reading between the lines Focus and Stability: It’s imperative to focus on key aspects of a project and remain calm under pressure.

Objectivity and Fairness: Strong leaders are inclusive in their communications and seek to constructively overcome differences Consistency and Flexibility: Great leaders are reliable and consistent with their communication quality, style, and frequency — yet still adapt based on audience needs Confidence: But not arrogance Leading by example: True leaders make every effort to live by the same rules they expect of others and affirm to the team that they, too, walk the talk. Energy and Motivation: a leader’s disposition and motivational abilities can mean the difference between teams that work cohesively or in complete dysfunction. Highly effective communicators boost team morale and motivate. Respect: Highly effective leaders communicate in a clear and concise manner while still demonstrating respect and value for the contributions and opinions of others. Accessibility: Highly effective leaders are never closed-off.

Communication Skills The ability to set out the goal or the target to be hit. You cannot expect the team to hit the target goal, if they don't know what it is. The ability to communicate the plan of action that, it is hoped will describe successful action, capable of achieving the goal. Formulate an excellent Master plan and communicate the excellent master plan. It is an important skill in leadership: to have only one possible meaning derived from your message The ability to communicate delegated actions: who is going to do which task? This is the art of delegation. Delegation is the act of entrusting a task to another. All good managers and leaders are incessant and accurate delegators.

The ability to give corrective critical feedback to the people who are not performing in the proper manner. It is important to be able to criticise people in a manner that corrects the behaviour but does not foul the relationship. The ability to give praise and appreciation to those who are doing a good job. It is equally important to be able to praise, as it is to critique. Well timed and specific praise is one of the social motivators. The ability to communicate the need for constant change, adaptation, refinement and flexibility to the conditions, whilst still remaining faithful to the overall goal and plan. You have to be able by good communication to keep people motivated and feeling strong. Even during the times where the plan is not working well or when it is a complete failure

Keep progressing with the areas that are working well. Modify and adapt the parts that aren't working well. Completely rewrite and change the parts that are a complete failure.

Communications Exercise You are the CEO of a medium sized airline operating out of Ireland. The company has been reasonably profitable in the past however recently, profit margins have been tight. Due to a sudden crisis in the Middle East the cost of fuel has risen dramatically and as a result the company has had to go into examinership with immediate effect. The examiner has ordered all flights to be grounded for a week, however it has been indicated that there is the possibility of a return to limited flight operations then. You are confident as CEO that the full operation will eventually be able to resume, but with a reduced workforce. Devise a communication strategy to deal with the above crisis

Lecture Goal To provide students with knowledge of Leadership and Management communications principles and skills and how to apply them in a practical scenario
