Urban vs. Rural In the early 1900s, geographers noticed drastic differences between people who lived in urban and rural areas. Sociologist Louis Wirth described how the life of a city dweller and a rural dweller were different in the 1930s. Wirth defined a city as a permanent settlement that has three characteristics: LARGE size High density Social heterogeneity

Large Size High density Social Heterogeneity

How do social differences in rural vs How do social differences in rural vs. urban residents compare in LDCs and MDCs? 90 or more % of people in MDCs hold service-based jobs. Virtually everyone owns cars, phones, TVs, computers, etc. Modern transportation has also minimized these differences.

Based on a combination of economic, political, cultural, and infrastructure factors.

Economic Political Cultural Infrastructural

Global Cities: centers for the provision of services in the global economy Due to size, global cities have retail services with huge market areas. Disproportionate # of wealthy leads to availability of luxury items Most plays, concerts, operas, night clubs, restaurants, bars, sports Largest museums, libraries, theatres More plays in London than all of UK combined; nearly as many theatres in NYC than rest of US combined
