The Thirty Years’ War was caused by religious strife in part created by the Protestant Reformation and the uneasy treaty, the Peace of Ausburg in 1555 that ultimately led to the Defenestration of Prague in 1918. The Protestant Reformation, prompt by Martin Luther and his 95 Thesis in 1517, led to the development of new Christian sects that broke away from the Catholic Church. Protestantism spread across Europe and many people began to convert from Catholicism to Protestantism. This meant that kingdoms and empires within Europe began to experience division and tension due to religious differences. The Holy Roman Empire, one of the largest empire in Europe at the time saw this first hand as various princes within the empire began to convert to Protestantism, while the emperor remain stanchly Catholic. To resolve this religious stifle within his empire, the Hapsburg rulers signed the Peace of Ausburg. This treaty gave a degree of religious tolerance within the Holy Roman Empire by allowing the princes in the empire to choose between Catholicism or Lutheranism as the main religion within their states. The treaty worked temporarily to ease the religious tension within the Holy Roman Empire but also at the same time excluded various other Protestant sects as it only identify Lutheranism as Protestantism. This treaty would only lead to more tension and strife between Protestants and Catholics within the empire. The tension came to a boiling point when two Catholics were thrown out of a window in Prague during a heated debate over the newly crowned emperor Ferdinand II of the Holy Roman Empire. This event, later called the Defenestration of Prague, would be the tipping point to the Thirty Years’ War.

Prompt: Using specific examples, analyze the consequences of the 30 Years’ War. Thesis Evidence #1 Analysis (2-3 sentences) This means… This is important because… Evidence #2 Concluding sentence
