Climate Climate is what we expect…weather is what we get! We buy clothes to fit the climate…we wear clothes to fit the weather

Climate Versus Weather Describes the temperature and precipitation you can expect to experience over an area in any given season. Weather: Describes detailed conditions over a specific place on a specific day.

Precipitation: Maritime v Continental Large amounts of precipitation Close to an ocean Example: Vancouver, BC. Continental: Low amounts of precipitation Far inland, not near any large bodies of water. Example: Churchill, Man.

Factors Affecting Climate Climate Factor Impact Latitude Farther away from the equator, the colder it will be. Elevation Higher the place, the colder it will be. Air Masses Each air mass brings its own climate conditions. Prevailing Winds Winds that typically blow through a place bring the air masses with them. Nearness to Large Water Bodies Close to body of water = high precipitation and small temp range Far from body of water = low precipitation and large temp range. Ocean Currents Warm versus Cold ocean currents. Landforms Mountains act as barriers to climatic conditions. One side contains warm and moist air, the other side a very dry climate.
