NHU4 Listening and Speaking: Enjoy your teenage life!

Do you enjoy your teenage life?

Enjoy a presentation!  No.1 factor that makes teenagers happy:  No. 1 factor that makes teenagers unhappy: Friendship Pressure (of study)

Main Task What are the advantages and disadvantages of being teenagers? What can we do to enjoy a better teenage life?

Stages Raise a problem Case studies

I. Teenagers in Britain! Task I: An interview about teenage life in Britain Prediction: School life Family Study …

1. Listening for keywords: n. Teenagers Advantages Disadvantages  work  bills  friends  shopping  cinema freedom time money rules

2. Discourse markers (话语标记词) ① Right. How much freedom we don’t have, I mean. ② OK, OK. Life’s tough for kids, but what do you think it’s like being an adult? ③ Oh! There are so many! Let’s see. We can’t wear make make-up. We aren’t allowed to chew gum. ④ Well, speaking of school, I’ve got to go. Clarification(澄清,说明) Shifting to another topic Giving examples Permission (许可)& Obligation (义务) Shifting to another topic

II. British teenagers vs. Chinese teenagers! Task II: Doing an interview (Role-play)! ask A: Interviewer Comparison between teenage life in China and Britain B: Interviewee Answer questions (notes)

Permission and obligation An example A: XXX, I heard that you’d just come back from a visit to London. Tell me. What are the good things and bad things about being a British teenager? B: Well, children in my host family have got to… They are allowed to… A: Speaking of …, Chinese teenagers are different from… Unlike teenagers in Britain, we (don’t) have to… B: … Permission and obligation Discourse markers

III. Non-only child vs. Only child Task III: Listening to another interview! Differences in teenage life

Listening for specific information Prediction Read the table carefully. Predict the parts of speech. e.g. We had old bikes, ______, but we had lots of _______. Pay attention to: n.: single / plural form v.: tense / voice n. n.

Non-only child Advantages Disadvantages The main advantage was that we learned how to enjoy life without having a lot of money. We had old bikes, old clothes, but we had lots of freedom. But the advantages outweighed the disadvantages enormously. It was very difficult sometimes to have hand-me-down clothes. We didn’t go away on holiday like some other children.

Advantages Disadvantages When I was young, I had lots of cousins who played together with me and a best friend like a sister. Some people who come from large families might envy you because you had all of your parents’ attention. As a teenager, you’re unsure of how to deal with things and people. I think it has its negative side as well as its positive side. It was hard to find myself and my place in the world. As an adult, I’m the one who’s left totally responsible for my mother. I have to look after my mother if she has a problem and help her.

2. Language focus: advantages and disadvantages Underline the expressions on your working sheets. The main advantage was that we learned how to enjoy life without having a lot of money. But the advantages outweighed the disadvantages. I think it has its negative side as well as its positive side. 利大于弊
