GREAT MIGRATION A MASS MOVEMENT OF AFRICAN AMERICANS FROM THE SOUTH TO THE NORTHERN CITIES OF AMERICA APROXIMATELY 6 MILLION AA’S MOVED IN HOPES OF A BETTER LIFE.

REASONS FOR MOVING FROM THE SOUTH Many A.A.’s moved to escape from the racial discrimination and mistreatment they received in the South.

REASONS FOR MOVING FROM THE SOUTH Some A.A.’s moved to gain employment in factory jobs that were available since many white men were off fighting in WW I

JAZZ JAZZ MUSICIANS PLAYED IN BARS AND CLUBS TO PACKED AUDIENCES OF BOTH BLACKS AND WHITES.

COTTON CLUB ONLY ACCEPTED THE “ELITE” BLACKS WHO HAD THE POPULARITY AND MONEY. ACCEPTED BLACK FEMALES DANCERS ONLY IF THEY MET A CERTAIN CRITERIA; MAINLY TALL WITH A LIGHT COMPLEXION.

APOLLO THE PLACE WHERE A.A.’S WENT TO TEST THEIR TALENTS IN ORDER TO PERSUE THEIR DREAMS IN ENTERTAINMENT. A POPULAR SAYING WAS “IF YOU CAN MAKE IT AT APOLLO- YOU CAN MAKE IT ANYWHERE.”

FASHION MEN WORE SUITS WITH LONG SUIT JACKETS, BAGGY PANTS, WITH MATCHING HATS WITH A FEATHER. THEY ALSO WORE POCKET WATCHES WITH A LONG CHAIN,

FASHION WOMEN WORE BALL GOWNS WITH SPARKLING RHINESTONES, LONG SILK GLOVES, HIGH HEELS, FURS, MATCHING HATS, AND PEARLS.

DANCE THE POPULAR DANCES OF THE TIME WERE THE CHARLESTON (NAMED AFTER THE CITY IN S.C) AND TAP DANCING.

BILL “BOJANGLES” ROBINSON POPULARIZED TAP DANCING, ESPECIALLY WHEN HE PERFORMED ON TV WITH SHIRLEY TEMPLE.

ART POPULAR ARTISTS OF THE TIME MADE PAINTINGS THAT REFLECTED THE CULTURE IN WHICH THEY LIVED.

LITERATURE MANY BLACK WRITERS EMERGED FROM THE TIME PERIOD. THEY MAINLY WROTE ABOUT WHAT IT IS LIKE TO LIVE AS A BLACK AMERICAN.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION WHEN THE GREAT DEPRESSION HIT AMERICA, THE END OF THE HARLEM RENNAISANCE ERA CAME TO A CLOSE.

HARLEM HARLEM BECAME A LARGE AREA OF UNEMPLOYED BLACKS STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE THROUGH DRUGS, CRIME, PROSTITUTION, AND GANG VIOLENCE

UNTIL…….. BLACKS WERE FORCED OUT BECAUSE THEY COULD NO LONGER AFFORD TO LIVE THERE.

gentrification- the process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents.
