Zeus -King of the gods -Married to Hera, but had a ton of affairs (often with mortal women he found to be beautiful) -Controlled lightning, and is often depicted sitting on a throne on Mt. Olympus
-Goddess-queen of the sea, and wife of Poseidon Amphitrite -Goddess-queen of the sea, and wife of Poseidon -The female personification of the sea
Apollo -The god of music, healing, light, and truth, also responsible for giving the science of medicine to man
Poseidon -The god of the sea, earthquakes, floods, drought and horses -Usually depicted holding a trident (a three-pronged fisherman's spear)
Ares -The god of war, and son of Zeus and Hera -Represented the raw violence and untamed acts that occurred in wartime
Aphrodite -Goddess of love, desire, and beauty -Had a magical belt (girdle) that forced everyone who saw her to fall in love with her
Artemis -The goddess of hunting, the wilderness and wild animals, and childbirth -In ancient art Artemis was usually depicted as a girl or young maiden with a hunting bow and quiver of arrows.
Hermes -The messenger of the Olympic gods -As time went on, he was also associated with luck, shepherds, athletes, thieves, and merchants
Athena -She protected cities, and was the goddess of war strategy, handicraft, and practical reason -Born from Zeus’ forehead fully grown and wearing armor
-God of blacksmiths, sculptors, metal working, fire and volcanoes Hephaestus -God of blacksmiths, sculptors, metal working, fire and volcanoes -Considered super ugly -Married to Aphrodite
-A Titan, and the personification of the Sun Helios -A Titan, and the personification of the Sun
Persephone -Kidnapped by Hades, she became the Queen of the Underworld -The ancient Greeks used this story to explain the change of the seasons, the eternal cycle of the Nature's death and rebirth
Sirens -half bird and half woman -lured sailors to their doom with sweet singing
The muses -Greek goddesses who ruled over the arts and sciences and offered inspiration in those subjects
