The legal way for me to have you gamble RISK OR REWARD The legal way for me to have you gamble

What is the point of playing this game? We are preparing for SAGE We are remembering good writing techniques to use in our lives even if we aren’t taking SAGE because our parents opted us out. We intend to be literate humans. Games are fun, and Mrs. H. is legit.

Practice Question True/False

True or False? TRUE! You will be given 2 days to write 2 essays. The argument essay is a full blown 5 paragrapher – like the ones we have done before. The informational is 3 paragraphs long. On the SAGE test, you have 2 days to write 2 different essays, one argument and one informational.

Question #1 True/False

True or False? FALSE! It’s much more complicated than that. Where is the counterclaim supposed to go? One piece of evidence? Lame. How many should there be? Mrs. Hendrickson’s structure for argument is: INTRODUCTION Hook Background info Claim with warrants BODY PARAGRAPHS Warrant / Topic sentence Evidence Explain Elaborate Concluding Sentence / Link to claim CONCLUSION Rephrased claim Emphasized Warrants K.O. statement

Question #2 True/False

True or False? There’s no other way about it. This is literally one of the best structures to use to get a good grade on SAGE, or to sound smart when writing informative pieces. The structure for Mrs. H’s informational essay is: INTRODUCTION Hook Background Information Thesis with supporting points BODY PARAGRAPH Topic sentence that rephrases points Evidence to support point one Explanation Evidence to support point two Evidence to support point three Concluding sentence about how points are connected to thesis CONCLUSION Rephrased thesis Emphasize points Wrap- up/ K.O.

Question #3 True/False

True! Although you cannot listen to music or have ANY electronics other than the ones provided, you can use earplugs if you bring your own from home. True or False? When taking the SAGE, I am allowed to bring ear plugs to help me stay focused during the writing portion.

Question #4 True/False

True! Our thesis or claim is always the main point that we are trying to make or show in our paper. It needs to be at the end of our introductory paragraph so that they know what they are supposed to learn while reading. It’s the happy caboose to our introduction! True or False? It doesn’t matter what paper you are writing (argument or informational), the claim (argument) or thesis (informational) should ALWAYS be the last sentence in the first paragraph

Question #5 True/False

False. If you are supposed to take the SAGE and you miss a day, they will pull you out of your other classes later and you will have to make up the days you missed. You will also have to make up any work you miss in your classes when making up SAGE. True or False? If your parents did not opt you out of SAGE, and if you are gone on the days we take it, you will not be required to make it up.

Question #6 True/False

False. Although we do want to prove that we aren’t bias, the most important thing to do in our counterclaim is prove the other side wrong. We want to make sure our reader knows that we understand the other side, but that we still think they are dead wrong! True or False? The most important thing to do with a counterclaim is to make sure that you really explain the other side so that you don’t appear to be bias while writing.

Question #7 True/False

False. In an informational essay, we aren’t arguing anything False. In an informational essay, we aren’t arguing anything. We are just giving information. It’s hard to have a counterclaim when we don’t have a claim for it to be the opposite view of. Informational essays have theses instead of claims. True or False? We should have a counterclaim in our informational essay.

Question #8 True/False

True! You tell me why. What makes this claim a good one? True or False? This is a good claim. Girls take more time to get ready in the mornings than boys do because girls will change outfits multiple times, shave their legs in the shower, and style their hair and makeup to perfection.

Question #9 True/False

True or False? True! You tell me why. What makes this thesis a good one? This is a good thesis. Many children pull faces in school because it helps them to avoid boredom, builds fun connections with friends, and has a sense of thrill due to the fact that they could get into trouble if caught.

Question #10 True/False

True or False? This is a good thesis. It should be illegal for parents to ground their children from things the child purchased with their own money because those items are personal property, so in reality they are stealing. You tell me why. What is wrong with this thesis?

Question #11 YES or NO

YES or NO? YES! You tell me why. What makes this claim a good one? Is this a good claim? Non-diet sodas should be put back into the vending machines because people should be allowed to put anything into their own body that they want to, it would help to fund the soda companies, and it would be a nice option for an energy boost if kids come to school tired.

Question #12 YES or NO

YES OR NO? NO! It is missing something major. What is it? What else is wrong? Is this a good piece of evidence for this warrant? Claim: Teachers should not give out homework. Warrant: Test scores don’t improve through homework. Evidence: “Research casting doubt on that assumption goes back at least to 1897, when a study found that assigning spelling homework had no effect on how proficient children were at spelling later on.”

Question #13 YES or NO

YES. This explains what the quote means YES! This explains what the quote means. It doesn’t have repetition of words in the evidence/quote, so it doesn’t sound choppy or like we just reworded the quote. It is a true explanation. YES OR NO? Is this a good explanation of this evidence? Claim: Teachers should not give out homework. Warrant: Student knowledge and ability doesn’t improve through homework. Evidence: For example, Alfie Cohn stated that “research casting doubt on that assumption goes back at least to 1897, when a study found that assigning spelling homework had no effect on how proficient children were at spelling later on.” EXPLANATION: This shows that no matter how much spelling words were practiced at home, this did not improve the students’ abilities to spell later on in their lifetime.

Question #14 YES or NO

YES OR NO? NO! Pair share with your neighbor. See how many things you can come up with that are wrong. Is this a good conclusion? In conclusion, spiders are scarier than boys because they creep up on you and are like, really scary. They like, will like, bite you and like, try to crawl into your brain and lay eggs in it. So like, when you go to sleep, like, cover up like, i dunno, like just like keep like your like head like under like the like blankets so that like you can like not have that like happen to you because you would never want that to happen to you because it is like painful. IM BORED! If you don’t listen to me, then you are probably a moron and deserve to be ruled out by natural selection anyway. Hopefully you listen though. Thank you for your time in lisetneing to what i got to say. PEACE! *drops mic*

Multiple Choice – A, B, or C Question #15 Multiple Choice – A, B, or C

Multiple choice – A, B, or C? C! Tell me why! Which thesis is the best thesis? Cows can often get mad cow disease. Students should shower more often because they have P.E. for a class, they are sweatier than they were in elementary school, and they are at dating age and need to make a good impression on their gender of choice. Teenagers often do not study as hard as they should because they prefer to play with friends, binge watch Netflix, and sleep for long periods at a time.
