What is Inequality? A situation where one group does not have: Equal Share Equal Opportunity Equal Treatment Equal Representation Equal Access
What is Prejudice? An opinion about other people. Not based upon previous experience with that particular person. Tied to the perceived belonging to a particular group.
Prejudice vs. Inequality Is every inequality bad? No Some inequalities are justified. Such as the fact that people who have committed murders are more likely to be in jail than those who have not. The problem is when inequalities are caused prejudicial treatment.
The Prejudice Residual Not all inequalities are based on prejudice. Parts of most inequalities can be explained by logical reasons. The trick is to find whether there is a part of that inequality that non-prejudiced reasons cannot explain. This is the prejudice residual.
Example: US Gender Wage Gap 20% less 27: education, children, region, occupation, government employment, part time vs full time. (14.9%) 39: female-to-male work ratios, education, experience, marital status, region, minority status, part time vs full time, union membership, gov jobs, industry (8.9%)
