_(your school’s name)_ High School Your high school will be paying you to serve ice cream to the entire student body. Based on how many people you need to serve and the data from task 1, how many tubs of each flavor will you buy? (for this example we will use the data given and a student population of 2,200 students)

First, let’s use percentages for our probabilities. Vanilla 22% Rocky Road 29% Strawberry Cheesecake 12% Chocolate Chip 37% If there are 2,200 students, we can use these probabilities to estimate how many servings of each flavor we need. # of students x % = # of servings needed Ex. Vanilla 2200 x 0.22 = 484 We will need 484 servings of vanilla ice cream. Teacher may have to review finding percentages with students. After examples, have students partners find the number of servings for the other 3 flavors. After students are finished show the next slide for answers.

Answers Vanilla-484 Rocky Road-638 Strawberry Cheesecake-264 Chocolate Chip-814

How many servings in a 5 gallon tub? Each serving is ½ cup There are 16 cups per gallon 32 servings per gallon 5 gallon will yield 160 servings Ask students for the next line before you show them the conversion. “Each serving is ½ cup and there are 16 cups per gallon, how many servings in a gallon?” Talk to your partner. “How did you get your answer?” “If there are 32 servings per gallon, how many servings in a 5 gallon tub?” Have students discuss and solicit student answers before showing them the answer.

Vanilla We needed 484 servings of vanilla. How many 5-gallon tubs should we buy? Why?

With a partner….. How many 5-gallon tubs of Rocky Road should we buy? Strawberry Cheesecake? Chocolate Chip?

Your Turn…. Complete the worksheet using the data that you collected from your survey. Please use complete sentences and justify your answers.
