Rock and Mineral collection Keep definitions out of the visual presentation. All of your knowledge of each rock type you present, should be evidenced through your oral presentation. 1. You will have a picture of each rock type presented . 20 pts. 2. You will label your rocks. 20 pts. 3. Explain to your audience a. what rock type the picture is of 20 pts. b. how the rock type was formed 20 pts. c. what observable characteristics helps you to identify the rock type in the picture. 20 pts.

Rock and Mineral collection Rock Types Igneous Intrusive mafic felsic intermediate Extrusive

Rock and Mineral collection Rock Types Sedimentary – describe its formation A rock is weathered, its pieces pieces moved and deposited as sediment by wind , water or moving ice, then lithified over time to form solid stone. Clastic – describe, categorize sizes of clasts. breccia conglomerate sandstone shale (siltstone or mudstone)

Rock and Mineral collection Rock Types Sedimentary Organic Coal – describe its formation lignite bituminous anthracite Limestone – describe its formation fossiliferous limestone coquina limestone

Rock and Mineral collection Rock Types Sedimentary Chemical – Describe its formation Halite Calcite Gypsum

Rock and Mineral collection Rock Types Metamorphic Regional metamorphism – describe Foliated - Contact metamorphism – describe Non- Foliated - Sandstone to …? Limestone to…? Shale to…? Granite to …?
