EROSION FOLDABLE
Class 8b: Desert and glacial landforms. Desert landforms Tend to be stark, barren (not much soil)
Types of Landforms Caused by Erosion & Deposition
 As glaciers travel over land, glacial ice can erode the underlying bedrock.  This erosion can happen by:  Plucking  Abrasion.
10.4. Erosion  Water, in either gas, liquid, or solid form can change the surface of the earth, it can even carve rock!  Erosion is the transportation.
Erosion and Deposition
Fluvio-Glacial Landforms. Fluvio-glacial landforms are landforms molded by glacial meltwater. There are 2 main fluvio-glacial features; 1)Outwash Plains.
Deposition. When transported material settles or comes to rest Caused by: running water, glacial ice, waves, or wind losing energy so they can no longer.

Erosion and Deposition Erosion - Movement of weathered materials from one location to another.
What is erosion? -Erosion is the removal of rock particles and soil from an area -Erosion requires energy (usually supplied by gravity)
Changing Earth’s Surface Changing Earth's Surface Weathering –The process that breaks down and changes rocks that are exposed at Earth’s surface 8.1.
Ch 15: p  Enormous masses of moving ice created by the accumulation and compaction of snow.  Powerful agents of erosion ~ have carved some.
Glaciers We wouldn’t be here without them.. A Glacier is an accumulation of snow that is large enough to survive the summer melt. These large ice masses.
Mass movement & Glacial erosion
Glacial Erosion and Deposition. Erosion Glaciers have the capacity to carry huge rocks and piles of debris over large distances They grind out parallel.
Glacial Landscapes Glacier = large moving mass of ice. Glacier = large moving mass of ice. Glaciers erode, transport and deposit massive amount of sediment.

What is Erosion and How is it Different than Weathering  Weathering is the breaking down of rock into smaller pieces.  Erosion is the MOVEMENT of these.

Presentation transcript:

Glaciers & erosion Glaciers can leave behind large boulders known as erratic. Glaciers can move lots of sediments that can carve striations or grooves into rocks.

Glaciers & Erosion Drift or till is all sediment that is deposited by glacial activity Moraine: ridge or pile of boulders, gravel, sand left at the end of a glacier Esker: sediment carried by water in channels of a glacier (outwash)

Running Water & Erosion Rivers with lots of energy can move lots of sediment and even large boulders. Fast water, large discharge, & a steep slope = high erosion Slow water, low discharge, & gentle slope = low erosion

Running Water & Erosion

Running Water & Erosion River meanders or bends in the river, shows how mature a river is.

Mass Movement & Erosion Mass movement is the downward transportation of weathered materials by gravity.
