What’s the definition of slang? Eng SL – US 1st meaning 2nd reasons using 3rd how SL made (young) Whats New & informal wds/phrases, certain groups Use Say sth new; unusal way E.g. pumped up kids = excited Playful +  Vs impolite, offensive

Why do people use slang? 1. * feel connected 2nd ** friendly + casual Peer group E.g. friends, SL=connected, USE SL= group identity 2nd ** friendly + casual Wkplace; Colorful, impression

How is slang created? 3 ways 1st old word, new meaning E.g. wired: adj. excited, crazy, energy 2nd create a new word Sub-culture, smaller groups E.g. bling-bling: shiny jewlry Hip pop Bling-bling she is wearing 3rd way: borrow word from another language Language/culture, Differences in slang 1st region: South (hey yo) VS califor (what’s up) 2nd occupation: general SL (bottom line= net income)

Why is slang controversial? (- concerns) 1st- too much SL, destroy Lang E.g. young ppl, instyle, X grammar, X rules E.g. youth slang: My bad. (respons for mistake) X grammar 2nd- formal situation SL informal, SL writing, X SL in EAP essays 3rd- final point Lang change New SL help Lang grow + change

Homework Prepare for a mini job interview on Monday Interviewee (with resume): prepare for the interview. Make sure you can explain each bullet point fluently and do enough research of the position and the company. Interviewers: together, prepare at least 5 questions you will ask the interviewee The interview will take 10-15 minutes. Start creating the powerpoint slides for your speaking exam. Make at least four slides (including one chart) and print it out for Monday. Upload powerpoint slides by May 12 next Friday
