The Battle For The Throne Friday 13th February 2015 The Battle For The Throne The three men the who all want the prestigious title as king. L.O: to learn about the three men and their claims to the throne.

Let me take you back to 1066… OK, it is the year 1066 and on the 5th January the previous ruler Edward the Confessor has died peacefully in his sleep. Most of the country is in mourning but some have very different thoughts… Edward had no children of his own, therefore there was no rightful leader to claim the throne. Three men claimed to be the rightful rulers of England yet their claims were kind of, well, dodgy!

Who wants the Throne? Harold Hardrada Harold Godwineson William of Normandy

Lets meet the guys… Harold Godwineson I am Harrold Godwineson and unlike all these other numbskulls I am actually English. We control Wessex you know. I have tried to take over, fifteen years ago, but I was chucked out. But I'm back now and ready to take the crown. I was related to Edward too; He was my brother in law. He also promised the throne to me on his deathbed. “ I commend all the kingdom to your protection”. What more can I say! I am your rightful ruler. Oh and don't listen to the others. Its all lies what they say anyway. Fifteen years ago was promised the throne and I was patient for those years. I am patient no longer now and I am ready to take the throne. This all happened because Edward loved us and grew up with us until he became king 1042. He later asked for our help in1051 when Harold Godwineson tried to take over. In return for this help I was promised the throne. Either he promised the throne accidently to a few people or I smell a rat. Another thing . Not long ago Harold wanted me to release his nephew and I agreed on one condition: When Edward died he would help me take the throne. There you have it … I am your rightful king William Of Normandy Harald Hardrada I'm a Viking and I do not come in peace. I am here to claim my throne. Vikings have been kings for one and a half centuries and why not have another? England ought to be a land ruled by Vikings and it would have never stopped being one if Edward hadn’t seized our throne king Magnus promised me the throne and I am now ready to take it. If I cant take it peacefully I shall take it by force.

Problems for Harold… Harold has secretly been crowned king yet there are still two angry claimants to the throne. He realises that Harald and William will not back down to a fight but his advantage is that he is in England. Harold knows not where to guard as they could come from anywhere. VICTORY!! Harold is victorious at the battle of Stamford bridge and kills Harald. But what about William?

Thank you for listening and be ready to hear more when some groups talk about!
