AEMT APPRENTICESHIPS Dr. Martin Killeen

Level of Apprenticeships Different levels of Apprenticeship available Intermediate Apprenticeship Advanced Higher Level 2 12-18 months Equivalent to 5 GCSEs A* - C Level 3 18-48 months Equivalent to 2 A-levels Levels 4,5,6,7 24 months+ Equivalent to foundation degree level+

level 2 Apprenticeship Level 2 is for entrants that do not have the GCSE grades to enter at level 3 At present a level 2 on the new forma has not been created so the old level 2 is still valid PEO plus the NVQ and achievement of level 2 English and maths Using the old funding

LEVEL 3 APPRENTICSHIP The standard has to be job skilled has to have at least 20% off the job training Develops transferable skills and English and maths for career development Creates a recognised occupation by achievement of the apprenticeship Trains the apprentice to the level required

What is our standard ? The standard that has been recommended that meets most members needs is the MOET This is the Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician. A copy is available on request . A long with details of the end point assessment . This has already been established as a standard and we can match the specific job skills to the standards requirements. Members can adopt the standard and fit to their local needs and college / supplier

The structure MOET standard with the selected specialist option plus a BTEC Diploma and specialist short courses . Electrical Technician Mechanical Technician Control and Instrumentation Technician Electromechanical Technician

Technical Certificate You are not required to have a technical certificate as part of the apprenticeship but the recommendation is that the AEMT adopts one BTEC Level 3 Diploma

POWER SECTOR Units being used Year 1 Mathematics Primary Forming Techniques Engineering Materials Electrical Principles   Year 2 Mechanical principles Computer Aided Design Mechanical Systems Communication Electrical Technology Project

20 % OFF THE JOB The 20 % is of total hours including holidays . The technical certificate delivery would not cover all the 20% Other training or courses need to be included. Either in house or off site e.g. rewind , bearing failure , health and safety , testing etc .

Log book Log book needs to be kept to record the on the job skills that meet the standard The company needs to appoint a mentor to supervise this process. Note Apprentices will have to move around to cover all the standards criteria

End point assessment Interview after a check of the log book Interview to include a third party . IET and IMechE state it has to be a chartered Engineer. If the apprentice fails the interview they have one more attempt. Emphasis is on proving that competence and understanding of the criteria has been achieved. Apprentices will be asked questions that will be based on general expected knowledge and understanding and gaps that are apparent in the log book.

What next? We cross match job descriptions with the MOET standard Identify training gaps that members or the AEMT can supply for specific skills e.g. motor repair, NDT, rewinding, bearing theory etc.. We could identify trainers e.g. colleges or training providers we recommend. Set up a central recruitment service to support members to short list.

Any Questions?
