Presentation transcript:

Pair up. Get to “know” your partner Pair up! Get to “know” your partner. You’ll be asked to survey their personality characteristics. Have students pair up and interview each other to find out what the other person is like. After a few moments, give them a questionnaire about the other person.  When they have completed the questionnaire about their partners, have them respond to the same questionnaire about themselves. Then ask all participants to count the number of times they marked "depends on situation" for their partner and themselves.

Fundamental Attribution Error External Factors (e.g., situational influences) Internal Factors (e.g., personality or disposition) People are more likely to choose "depends on situation" for themselves than for others -- the Fundamental Attribution Error -- attributing their behavior to the situation and the behavior of other people to their personality. people place undue emphasis on internal characteristics of the agent (personality), rather than external factors, in explaining other people's behavior this is in contrast to interpretations of their own behavior, where the inverse is true

Fundamental Attribution Error

Why do we commit FAE? Just-world phenomenon Salience of the actor (versus the situational influences) Automaticity (i.e., lack of effortful cognitions) Culture
