Volunteers in Palu help with search and rescue efforts, as thousands of people are still missing.

Mudslides have blocked roads and key access routes, making it hard to reach and assess the areas affected.

Buildings have collapsed, places are without power and there is little drinking water or food.

Situation overview (2 October 2018)

Volunteers help to clear rubble and debris.

Aid workers give first aid and medical help.

Volunteers assess the situation.

Search and rescue teams help to rescue people from collapsed buildings.

People are given emergency supplies, such as drinking water.

Teams help to clear the rubble.

Workers help to restore water supplies.

People are evacuated from the island.

“More than 90 Indonesian Red Cross volunteers and staff were on the ground immediately. Their first priorities are search and rescue, medical support and distributing emergency relief supplies. They are also comforting terrified survivors and have set up an emergency kitchen to provide meals to people who had to leave their homes. Hundreds of villagers have joined the Red Cross, and Indonesia’s police, armed forces and local government agencies to rescue survivors. The Red Cross trucked in supplies to the area straightaway. These include tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats and clothing to support people who had to leave their homes. Three water trucks were sent to the area because local water supplies were damaged, along with 500 clean water containers. Five ambulances helped Red Cross volunteers and staff carry out first aid and take injured people to hospital.” (Source: British Red Cross blog)

"I was saved, so I have to give back "I was saved, so I have to give back. It's also hard just sitting in a tent in the hot sun all day, I would rather be cooking." (Source: Erna Wahyuni, BBC News)

Short term (days and weeks) Long term (months and years) Practical needs (food, water…) (new home, school…) Emotional needs and building resilience (coping skills, someone to talk to…) (positivity, perseverance, community building…)

Resilience is: Having the ability, skills, behaviours and coping strategies to support yourself and others during times of change or a sudden shift in circumstances, such as a crisis caused by a disaster or emergency. (Source: British Red Cross glossary)
