Why do we plan? What makes a ‘good’ plan?

Loops of Learning 30th June 2017

To understand what the ‘Loops of Learning’ approach is Objectives: To understand what the ‘Loops of Learning’ approach is To begin to consider how it can be used in each year group

Loops of Learning is a slightly different way of planning. It starts with a ‘wow’ activity to hook pupils in and get them interested in a topic. It ends with a ‘Presentation of Understanding’ – an event or piece of work where pupils can demonstrate their learning. All activities in between are carefully planned so that it equips pupils with the tools and understanding to experience success with the ‘Presentation of Understanding’. It involves the pupils taking more of an active part in planning and reviewing the learning. There is no set period of time – however many lessons required to get to the end point and this may change as the unit progresses.

The Loops of Learning Planning Process

Have a look at the case study on your table – what additional information can you gain about the ‘loops of learning’ approach?

Feedback from those in school that have trialled this….

After the WOW event, I showed the children the last loop – The Presentation of Understanding. I asked the children how we could get there. Although I pre-empted most of the loops (the non-negotiables) they gave me a couple of additional ones – the mini loops. At the end of each lesson, they heavily fed into the planning of the next lesson. Key questions was an integral part of the planning process. They really enjoyed knowing where their learning was going. They thought it served a purpose and knew why they were doing each lesson. Next time – I will be better at adding key questions on my plan. Also, AfL notes in a different colour were very useful to my seating arrangements in the next lesson.

What could a presentation of understanding be? To get us started…. What could a presentation of understanding be? Begin to consider some for your year group along with the matching WOW events.

Next steps: Plan with your new year team in advance of next term (minimum expectation is to use Loops for Creative Curriculum) Trial the unit in the first half of Autumn term. Use a staff meeting to share examples of planning, work produced and displays. Discuss what worked well and what was challenging. - Repeat with adaptations where necessary.
