TAKING A WINTER DRIVE INTRODUCTION: GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON. MY NAME IS __________________ AND MY ASSISTANT IS ______________. WELCOME TO THE USAREUR (FWD) WINTER DRIVING CLASS. FOR THE NEXT ___________ YOU WILL BE FAMILIARIZED WITH THE ASPECTS OF DRIVING UNDER SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS IN HUNGARY, CROATIA, AND BOSNIA.

PREPARE FOR WINTER WEATHER Wipers - Good working order Windshield Washer Fluid - Fill Up Anti-freeze - 50% water 50% Coolant Battery & Belts - Check condition Oil - Replace your oil with Winter grade oil Tires - Check treads, pressure and owners manual recommendations Ice Scraper - A necessity

BEFORE TRIPS: PACK WINTER CAR KIT SNOW BRUSH W/ SCRAPER FLASHLIGHT W/ BATTERIES BLANKET MITTENS, SOCKS & HAT SMALL SHOVEL SACK OF SAND OR KITTY LITTER JUMPER CABLES HAZARD SIGN, FLARES OR FLAG WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID

WARM-UP AND CLEAN-OFF 1. IDLE ENGINE - DO NOT RACE ENGINE! 2. CLEAN OFF VEHICLE COMPLETELY! - CLEAN ALL LIGHTS - SCRAPE ALL WINDOWS AND MIRRORS - SWEEP ALL THE SNOW OFF THE VEHICLE DURING COLD WEATHER YOUR VEHICLE WILL REQUIRE SOME SPECIAL ATTENTION/REQUIREMENTS. FOR INSTANCE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE: 1. THE WAIT LIGHT MUST BE OFF PRIOR TO STARTING BECAUSE THE GLOW PLUGS MUST BE WARM FIRST OR YOU MAY DAMAGE THE ENGINE. 2. DO NOT RACE THE ENGINE BECAUSE YOU MAY BURN OUT THE TURBO. ALSO, THE OIL HAS NOT YET CIRCULATED AND WILL RESULT IN EXCESS METAL TO METAL CONTACT. (CLASS DISCUSSION ON WHAT THE STUDENTS MAY THINK THE ADVANTAGES ARE IN RACING THE ENGINE). RACING THE ENGINE PROVIDES NO HEATER ADVANTAGE. (CLASS DISCUSSION ON WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO CLEAR THE VEHICLE OF SNOW AND ICE). 1. CLEAN ALL LIGHTS TO ENSURE MAXIMUM LIGHT ADVANTAGE. 2. SCRAPE ALL WINDOWS AND MIRRORS FOR ALL AROUND VISIBILITY. 3. SWEEP ALL SNOW AND ICE FROM THE VEHICLE TO PREVENT IT FROM FALLING WHILE MOVING. THIS COULD POSE A SERIOUS HAZARD FOR OTHERS. (CLASS DISCUSSION) Good all around visibility is important!!!!! remember, BEING IN A HURRY WILL RESULT IN ACCIDENTS DOWN THE ROAD!

RISK MANAGEMENT DRIVING DECISIONS Is my car equipped for the weather? Can I make this trip later? What would be the safest route? Am I prepared for emergencies? INSTRUCTOR WILL CONTINUE DISCUSSION FROM PREVIOUS SLIDE. INSTRUCTOR WILL INTERJECT PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WHILE DISCUSSING DRIVING IN EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS. DRIVERS MUST SHOW TURNING INTENT SOONER THAN USUAL.THIS GIVES THE DRIVERS BEHIND YOU MORE TIME TO REACT. MAINTAIN AT LEAST TRIPLE THE NORMAL DISTANCE FROM THE VEHICLE AHEAD.

POOR RISK MANAGEMENT OR BAD JUDGEMENT? FEBRUARY 13, 2016: MULTI-VEHICLE PILE UP IN PENNSYLVANIA CAUSING MULTIPLE DEATHS AND INJURIES TO 100+ MOTORISTS. WEATHER WARNING HAD PREDICTED FALLING SNOW MIXED WITH SLEET. ROADS PREDICTED TO HAVE SEVERE ICING. THIS WAS CAUSED BY (1) CARELESS DRIVER.

DRIVING TECHNIQUES Drive at reduced speeds so you can stop quicker. Give turn signals sooner than usual. This gives other drivers more time to react. Pump your brakes to warn of your intention to stop. Maintain at least triple the normal distance from the vehicle ahead. (6 seconds) INSTRUCTOR WILL CONTINUE DISCUSSION FROM PREVIOUS SLIDE.

DANGEROUS BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SEE IT! BLACK ICE DANGEROUS BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SEE IT! COMMON AREAS YOU FIND IT: 1. Bridges/Overpasses/Underpasses 2. Shaded areas. ( SHOW SLIDE ) 1) ASK, WHY IS IT DANGEROUS? 2) COMMON AREAS YOU FIND IT?

BLACK ICE REACTION DO NOT PANIC! MAKE NO SUDDEN CHANGES IN SPEED OR DIRECTION EASE OFF ACCELERATOR STEER IN DIRECTION THAT THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE IS SKIDDING ( SHOW SLIDE ) ( CLASS DISCUSSION ON WHAT YOU WOULD DO IF YOU HIT A PATCH OF BLACK ICE. )

FRESH SNOW CAN CONCEAL ICY ROADS ( SHOW SLIDE ) ( CLASS DISCUSSION ) ASK, IF ANY OF THE CLASS MEMBERS ( ESPECIALLY THE ONES FROM COLDER CLIMATES) REMEMBER LOOKING OUT OF THE THEIR WINDOWS BACK HOME AND SEEING A SHEET OF ICE COVERING THE ROAD, AND THE NEXT MORNING SEEING SNOW? ( DISCUSS ALL ANSWERS ) FRESH SNOW CAN CONCEAL ICY ROADS

_ _ _ _ SKIDS Result from unexpected forces: 1. Black Ice 2. Driving to fast for conditions 3. Sudden steering corrections or braking 4. Sudden accelerations

_ _ _ _ SKIDS (CONTINUED) If your vehicle begins to skid, take the following actions: 1. Front end skids - Release the brake and let the front wheels roll freely to regain traction and steering control. 2. Rear end skids - Take foot off of accelerator and turn wheels in the direction that the rear of the vehicle is skidding, and pump brakes lightly.

WHEN DRIVING IN FOG, USE LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS, USE A FRONT GROUND GUIDE ONLY IN EXTREME NECESSITY!!! CAUTION WHEN DRIVING IN FOG, USE LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS, or ( SHOW SLIDE ) CLASS DISCUSSION: HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE DRIVEN IN FOG BEFORE? ASK THE SOLDIERS TO DISCUSS THEIR EXPERIENCES. WHEN VISIBILITY IS POOR, USE LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS TO IMPROVE YOUR VISIBILITY AND TO WARN THE OTHER DRIVERS OF YOUR POSITION. STOP, PARK OFF THE ROADWAY, AND WAIT FOR CONDITIONS TO IMPROVE. HIGH BEAM LIGHT IS “LOST” IN THE FOG BECAUSE IT ISABSORBED. LOW BEAM LIGHT IS MORE DIRECTLY ON THE ROAD TO GIVE THE DRIVER BETTER VISIBILITY. IF YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST CONTINUE, HAVE AN ASSISTANT DRIVER OR PASSENGER WALK IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AS A GROUND GUIDE. STOP, GET OFF THE ROADWAY, AND WAIT!!

!!! DANGER !!! CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING Each year 1,500 people are killed in the U.S. by carbon monoxide, approximately 900 of whom die in their homes. More than 50,000 are exposed to levels so dangerous that medical attention is required.

CARBON MONOXIDE Attributes/Effects Odorless & Colorless Nausea, Headache, Dizziness Causes Drowsiness CAN BE FATAL

CARBON MONOXIDE Prevention 1. Never run engine in an enclosed area 2. Check exhaust (muffler) for leaks

For Safe Winter Driving Know Your Vehicle

BEFORE TRIPS: CHECK BATTERY ANTIFREEZE WIPERS & FLUID IGNITION SYSTEM THERMOSTAT LIGHTS HAZARD LIGHTS EXHAUST SYSTEM HEATER BRAKES DEFROSTER OIL LEVEL

Regular Brakes Pump the Brake Pedal. Brake System To make an emergency stop on a slippery road… Regular Brakes Pump the Brake Pedal. Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) Press down and hold. The ABS will pump for you.

Rear Wheel Drive Pushes Front Wheel Drive Pulls Drive System Rear Wheel Drive Pushes and Front Wheel Drive Pulls The systems may feel a little different, but always steer in the direction of the skid, and make gentle corrections to regain control.

KEY DRIVING TIPS ALLOW MORE TIME TO TRAVEL MAINTAIN MORE SPACE DRIVE WITH YOUR LIGHTS ON WEAR SAFETY BELTS LOOK WELL AHEAD ANTICIPATE PROBLEMS

STUCK IN SNOW CLEAR A PATH STRAIGHTEN FRONT WHEELS USE ABRASIVE MATERIALS UNDER WHEELS GENTLE PRESSURE ON ACCELERATOR DON’T SPIN WHEELS “ROCKING THE VEHICLE” - CHECK OWNER’S MANUAL LAST RESORT …

SUMMARY REMEMBER THE THREE P’s SLOW DOWN! GIVE DISTANCE PREPARE FOR THE TRIP PROTECT YOURSELF PREVENT CRASHES ON THE ROAD SLOW DOWN! GIVE DISTANCE CLEAN OFF WINDOWS - SEE CLEAN OFF ALL LIGHTS AND TURN LIGHTS ON - BE SEEN
