Tectonic plates & Mantle Convection

Tectonic Plates Recall that the lithosphere makes up the Earth’s crust and the upper part of the mantle. The lithosphere is solid rock and floats upon the asthenosphere.

Tectonic Plates The lithosphere is broken up into pieces called tectonic plates. Some tectonic plates are made up of oceanic crust. Most are made up of both oceanic crust and continental crust.

Tectonic Plates - they move!!

Tectonic Plates - they move! When magma rises from an ocean ridge, the magma produces new crust. As these plates are pushed apart, other plates are pushed together. Movement along any plate boundary results in changes at other boundaries. Different plates move at rates that vary between 1-15 cm per year.

Demonstration Time - Mantle Convection How does this demonstration explain what happens with mantle convection? Why is this significant for tectonic plates?

Plate Tectonics Inquiry Complete the pHet simulation handout on Plate Tectonics - this will teach us about WHY and HOW certain types of plates interact they way they do.
