Characteristics of Life

Remember this… MR Harry Henderson Cooks Scrambled Eggs

Why do organisms need energy? How do organisms obtain energy? M - Metabolism Metabolism – breaking up food and nutrients to obtain energy Why do organisms need energy? How do organisms obtain energy?

Is it Absolutely Necessary for an individual to reproduce? R - Reproduction 2 types of Reproduction Asexual Reproduction - involves a single parent Sexual Reproduction - involves 2 parents Is it Absolutely Necessary for an individual to reproduce?

H - Homeostasis Human body temperature……… Homeostasis - the ability of an organism to maintain its internal environment despite conditions in the external environment. Human body temperature……… if body temperature rises, you perspire. if body temperature lowers, you shiver.

H - Heredity Contains Genetic Material Heredity - passing of genetic material to offspring Two types: DNA and RNA

C O – Cellular Organization All living things are made of cells In multicellular organisms, cells are specialized to perform specific functions Which animal has BIGGER cells? Elephant or mouse? THEY ARE THE SAME SIZE! Elephant has MORE cells!

S – Sensitivity All living things are sensitive to their external environment

All living things change over time E – Evolution All living things change over time
