The Industrial Revolution A period of major industrialization in Europe in the 1700’s-1800’s.

The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain because... Good crops=more money to buy manufactured goods Move to cities= more industrial workers $ to invest Rivers=trade & power source

Cotton Cottage industry=old way New inventions=cotton easier to make Near water for power Steam engine could be located anywhere Play youtube video from 3:00-8:20, then skip to 12:41 and stop at 14:00.

Factories Domestic system no competition Run with profit in mind- made huge profits! Increase in jobs Things made quicker and cheaper Harsh conditions=long hours, irregular breaks, labor intensive, strict bosses, no safeguards Children employed= small & cheap! Factories

THE ROCKET (16 MPH) Railroads Connected cities for trade New jobs Less expensive transportation= less expensive goods

Spread of Industrialization Great Britain=richest nation Other European countries= railroads across Europe North America= Industrial Revolution in the U.S.

Impact Labor Unions= fight together for better working conditions through bargains and strikes. Laws to protect the worker led to minimum wage, maximum hours, etc. Shift from country life to city life Consumerism—need for stuff!
