Information literacy: what you need to do to be information literate in the 21st century

EVALUATING DATA SOURCES FROM THE WEB IS A SKILL ALL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ALIKE MUST HAVE The World Wide Web is a whole different beast of its own. Students have a tendency to believe everything they see and read on it. It is not enough for us as teachers to just say “don’t believe it; there are lies all over the Internet.” We must teach students to evaluate websites for themselves. Utilizing annotated bibliographies is a great way to do this. We did this in class and I found myself much more skilled at evaluating information I was obtaining. The next slide is an example of the tool that I used and will continue to use and teach must students as well. (Frank and Ernest, 2015)

THE CORRECT STEPS FOR INFORMATION LITERACY INVOLVE AT LEAST THE FOUR STEPS LISTED (Grand Valley State University, 2015)

EVALUATING ONLINE RESOURCES MLA Format AUTHOR CURRENCY BALANCE AND COVERAGE BIAS Instructions: Break up into groups of 3 Work together to define what these terms mean in information literacy Fill out the chart at your tables In 15 minutes we will come together and review and fill it out together to make sure we are all on the same page. You may use the following resource: Bomer, S. (2010). A School-wide Instructional Framework for Evaluating Sources. Knowledge Quest, 38(3),72-75, a copy of the article is being handed out to you.

The process is what is important: Use each step to create an annotated bibliography and then all the information is at your fingertips MLA Format: Use EASYBIB http://image.slidesharecdn.com/easybibinstructions-120322115324-phpapp01/95/easybib-instructions-1-728.jpg?cb=1332417302

Currency: when was the article written Currency: when was the article written? Is it within the last five years? Does this make it current and reliable?

Balance and coverage: is there good information Balance and coverage: is there good information? Is it the information you need? Does the information support your thesis? Can it be repeated? Does it cover all sides of the topic?

Bias: What is bias. How can it be shown. Who creates bias Bias: What is bias? How can it be shown? Who creates bias? Is the source valid if it shows bias?
