Working with and supporting refugees Jo-Ann Delaney Ann Cowie (by video) Canterbury Christ Church University

Our experience Teaching ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) Managing programmes specifically designed for refugees. Research (UK and Germany) on language provision and citizenship courses for refugees and migrants.

Challenging stereotypes Awareness raising of the language used to describe refugees. Discussion of portrayal of refugees in the press Statistics and damn lies!

Learners with English as a second language Immigration terminology task A migrant A refugee An asylum seeker A failed asylum seeker An illegal immigrant An expatriate

Emigration statistics Underline what you think is the correct answer. Look at the answers from national statistics. Which answer surprised you most / least? task

Minimum core work – beyond SPAG Element Multilingualism and the role of the first language in the acquisition of additional languages. Issues that arise when learning another language or translating from one language to another. task will enable trainee teachers to: · acknowledge and respect languages other than English; · encourage the use of other languages in the classroom; · reflect on their own approach to error and meaning; · develop approaches which help learners make best use of their first/other languages in learning new language and literacy skills in English.

Language awareness Classroom language / communication – “grading language” Awareness of colloquialisms, regional varieties. Beginner English is not the same as beginner learner. Learners with PhDs. Correction of spoken language (including pronunciation) is as important as correcting SPAG. Specific issues for second language speakers across all the minimum core areas (reading, writing, speaking and listening). Some awareness of English language and the tools to find out more.
