The Art of DRAMA 8th grade LA “OWN IT”

DRAMA is not only what happens in the lives of 8th graders… DRAMA: A Greek word meaning “action” A literary form involving written parts for actors to speak and perform.

Dramas (or PLAYS) can be performed in various medias such as… Drama = A PLAY Dramas (or PLAYS) can be performed in various medias such as… Live performances Radio (meant to be listened to) Film Television

Dramas (or plays) all have… 1. Cast of Characters: (n.) actors in a play

2. Stage Directions Instructions from the playwright about how actors should appear, move and behave. These also include descriptions of the set, props, scenery, voice and movements.

The process of developing and portraying a character. 3. Characterization The process of developing and portraying a character.

(Tells the actors when, where, and how) 4. Directing Assuming overall responsibility for the artistic interpretation and presentation of a dramatic work (Tells the actors when, where, and how)

5. Monologue A written piece spoken by just one person who exposes inner thoughts and provides insights into his or her character.

6. Narration Giving a description, establishing mood, bridging gaps in time (done by a Narrator)

7. Script The text of a dramatic work

8. Set Design A visual representation of the form and arrangement of scenery (what the setting looks like).

In order to be successful readers and interpreters of DRAMA… You must understand and recognize these elements when you are reading the drama: Flowers for Algernon or A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
