Lesson Goal: Learn about verbs tenses—past, present, and future tense. Outcomes: Be able to . . . Define the terms “verb tense” and each of these tenses: present, past, future. Explain how to form a past tense verb and provide examples. Explain how to form a future tense verb and provide examples. Identify the verb in any given sentence and indicate whether it is present, past, or future tense.

Starter #1 Wednesday we said that verbs always take one of two kinds of action: Physical action Taylor swam faster than anyone else at camp. Mental action Alicia calculated the score in her head. We can see physical action taking place, but we cannot see mental action.   Sometimes, an action verb is followed by a “direct object” (the object that receives the action) It always answers the question What? Or Whom? Kelsey’s soccer team won yesterday’s game. What is the action verb? won What is the direct object? game [just the noun, NOT the adjective before it] It answers the question, “She won what?”

Starter #2 What do we mean when we refer to a “verb’s tense”? It’s when the action takes place—present, past, or future   Present tense describes an action that happens on a regular basis: We visit my grandmother on Sundays. Present tense also describes a general, ongoing truth, like this:   We visit many relatives. Past tense describes action that has already happened. It is usually formed by adding –ed to a verb. We visited my aunt last weekend. Future tense describes action that will happen in the future. It is usually formed by adding will or shall just before the verb. We will visit my grandmother next Sunday. We will start today’s lesson in class. What is the verb tense of that sentence? 
