Government & Public Administration Career Field: Human Services and Resources

Executing governmental functions on the local, state, and federal levels; used to pass laws, defend foreign aggression, and represent American interests in a Democratic society.

Seven Pathways Governance National Security Foreign Service Planning Revenue and Taxation Regulation Public Management and Administration

1. Governance Elected or appointed officials who are responsible for making & executing public policy (laws) Occupations: Representatives Lobbyists Senator Mayor

Governance Credentials Educational background in political science or law. Age, length of citizenship, and background history are often a consideration. Popularity and public opinion influences type/length of job service.

2. National Security Military and field work experience is necessary for jobs in this pathway. Occupations: Combat Control Officer Military Defense Air Defense Officer

National Security Credentials Enlistment ages: 17 - 35 yrs of age Must be US citizen No felony record Possess a birth certificate Pass a written exam Be physically healthy A graduation diploma or its equivalent

3. Foreign Service Day to day operation of a US embassy are to assist American citizens who are abroad. Occupations: Ambassador Diplomat Political Officer

Foreign Service Credentials Must be able to serve overseas Must meet a physical standard because many places to serve are remote and unhealthy Must undergo a serious background check and receive a military clearance Competition for these jobs is high, and there are few available positions.

5. Revenue and Taxation Occupations: Assessor Tax Auditor Internal Revenue Investigator Tax Clerk Tax Attorney Workers obtain revenues from businesses and citizens by collecting, reviewing, and auditing tax dollars.

Revenue & Taxation Credentials Additionally, annual certification and training is necessary to keep up with current policies. Expected growth is slow due to computer programs & innovations for businesses. Some occupations require a college diploma in Accounting. However, some positions such as tax clerk would only require a high school education.

7. Public Management and Administration Requires mgt and control over public funds and resources. Occupations: City Council City Clerk Court Clerk 7. Public Management and Administration

Public Service & Mgt Credentials A total of 8.6 million people work in the public sector making it larger than the federal government. All college degrees are applicable. Many jobs only require technical training and work skill training. Growth is expected to be slower than average.
