God’s Promise to Abraham

When Abraham arrived in Israel, God made a promise When Abraham arrived in Israel, God made a promise. He said “ I will give you this land for your descendants and some of them will be kings”.

Discussion What is a promise? What sort of things might you promise someone? How do you feel if someone breaks a problem?

Abraham and his wife had a son called Isaac Abraham and his wife had a son called Isaac. God came to Abraham and said that if he loved him, he would sacrifice his son. Just as Abraham was about to kill Isaac, God stopped him and said “you have proved that you are devoted to me, here is a Ram instead”.

God re-affirmed his promise to Abraham and said “ I will give you as many descendants as there are stars in the sky and grains of sand along the seashore” Did this promise come true?

Task In small groups, role play a scenario where someone makes a promise but then breaks it. Think about how you would react and what would happen next, e.g. A friend promises to go to the cinema with you but then changes their mind and goes out with another friend instead. Your mum/dad promises to buy you a present if you do your homework but then doesn’t let you have it. Your Nan promises to pick you up after school but then forgets.
