The Integumentary System Standard: Explain the purpose of the human body’s major organ systems

What is the integumentary system? The natural outer covering of an organism For humans, this includes the skin, hair, and nails, sweat glands

What is the skin? The largest and heaviest organ in the human body Protects, nourishes, insulates , and cushions the human body Composed of two primary layers

What are the layers that make up skin? Epidermis (outer/surface layer of skin) Dermis (contains hair roots, sweat glands)

What are the functions of the skin? Protect the human body (First layer of defense) Sensory response Formation of vitamin D Regulation of body temperature (homeostasis) Excretion of waste
