OUTLINE INTRODUCTION POPULAR DRUGS THE FUTURE OF OBTAINING DRUGS SMOKING MARIJUANA IN MIDDLE SCHOOL VAPING AND WAX JUUL or JUULING? SKITTLES PARTIES GET IN YOUR KIDS BUSINESS QUESTIONS

WHAT DRUGS ARE POPULAR IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS Marijuana (11.7%) “Gateway Drug” Alcohol (8.1%) “Gateway Drug” Inhalants (5.3%) “Gateway Drug” Synthetic marijuana (3.3%) Cough medicine (2%) Tranquilizers (1.7%) Adderall (1.35%) as a “study drug” Hallucinogens (1.3%) OxyContin (1%) Vicodin (1%) Cocaine (1%) Ecstasy or MDMA (0.9%) Ritalin (0.9%)

The Internet: Biggest Drug Dealer of the 21st Century? By now it is hardly a secret that the internet is a place to buy and sell pretty much anything you can think of. In recent years, drug dealers have taken to Craigslist, Instagram, Snapchat, Kik and more to illegally sell drugs both locally and across state lines. These post deals with three different methods of buying drugs on-line; through messaging/photo apps (think typical mid-sized drug dealer), Legal Designer Drug vendors,  and the more mysterious Dark Web, where billions of dollars of drugs are bought and sold each year. Using hashtags such as #weed4sale or #orderxanax, pretty much anyone with a smart phone has the ability to connect with drug dealers on Smartphone Apps like Kik, Instagram, and Snapchat. Is it really that easy to buy drugs online? Yes. Most drug dealers use Western Union or Paypal and Overnight Shipping to avoid detection. However there are still risks and busts do occur, but it hasn’t slowed the rise of the online drug dealer. Research shows which drugs are most popular on these apps (Marijuana 82%, Codeine/Lean 58%, MDMA 20%, Pain Killers 18%, Xanax 16%, etc.)

Smoking Marijuana in Middle School (Stats represent the U.S. Average) Marijuana remains the most popular drug among middle school children, consistent with what’s also most popular with high school students. This makes sense, considering 7.5% of high school students surveyed said they first used pot before age 13. And they don’t just smoke — kids are finding more ways to obtain drugs, including buying or selling edibles (e.g. cookies or brownies) laced with the drug (Lip Balm is the latest craze). 11.7% of 8th graders smoked pot in the last year 6.5% of 8th graders smoked pot in the last month 1.1% of 8th graders smoke pot on a daily or near-daily basis 36.9% of 8th graders say it would be easy to get marijuana 42% of 8th graders don’t believe that regular marijuana use is harmful

Dangers of Marijuana as a “Gateway Drug” Those who smoke marijuana before age 15 are: More likely to use cigarettes at some point More than twice as likely to misuse a prescription drug Two and a half times as likely to abuse other illicit drugs

Weed Wax The “wax” is used with vaporizers or e-cigarettes or heated in a glass bong. Users prefer using e-cigarettes or vaporizers because it is smokeless, odorless, and easy to hide. POSSIBLE RELATED PARAPHERNALIA: vaporizer, e-cigarette, bong. Marijuana concentrates have a much higher level of THC. The effects of using may be more severe than from smoking marijuana, both psychologically and physically. Paranoia, anxiety, panic attacks, hallucinations, and giddiness. This addictive substance can also cause increased heart rate and blood pressure, convulsions, organ damage, and/or death.

Forms of WAX More than 25% of students in grades 6 thru 12 have tried e-cigarettes

JUUL or JUULING? What is JULL or JUULING? A Juul is an E-Cigarette that resembles a USB flash drive. Juuling is the common term that is used for the act of vaping when using this device. There are cartridges that are used to the vaping purpose. What sets it apart form other e-cigarettes is that it hits the body with a tobacco cigarette worthy dose of nicotine. Another way that this device is used is they replace the nicotine in the cartridges with liquid Marijuana or WEED-WAX.

SKITTLES PARTY A Skittles party is a home filled with teenagers where everyone brings all the prescription medications they have on hand and pool them. Then anyone at the party who wants to abuse a pill just dips in and grabs whatever they want. NOTE: With a deceptive name like a “Skittles Party”, it could be discussed right in front of a parent without them realizing anything was wrong.

GET IN YOUR KIDS BUSINESS NOTE: Parents should remember that they own their child’s devices, so they can dictate the terms of use, such as knowing passwords, setting time limits, installing blocking applications and setting curfews for usage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16YhXNlC414 https://abc11.com/2004831/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqz_nXQzNZ0
