Ch. 1 The World of Physical Science Unit 0 Science Process Skills Ch. 1 The World of Physical Science Sec. 1 Exploring Physical Science

Science science - process of gathering knowledge about the natural world - study of the universe scientists cannot answer questions about opinion-based topics (art, politics, personal preferences, or morality) scientific answers are uncertain b/c new knowledge & discoveries are continually being made - so science can only provide possible explanations

Branches of Science 3 main branches that study different types of systems Life Science - studies living things and how they interact (living systems) Earth Science - studies Earth and space Systems (nonliving systems) Physical Science - studies matter (chemistry) and energy (physics) - studies living AND nonliving systems, since both involve matter and energy

Physical Science is Everywhere what you learn about matter and energy are important for other science fields Meteorology: study of Earth’s atmosphere Meteorologists must understand pressure, motion, & force Geology: study of the origin, history, and structure of Earth Geologists must have a knowledge of heat, force, and chemistry

Technology the practical use of science is called technology [ex. studying how plants use sunlight to make food is science, BUT using that knowledge to make a solar panel is technology]
