Applications of Percent Section 7.4 Applications of Percent

Idea This section will be solving word problems that involve percents. Some problems require formulas, whiles others have them built into the problem.

Example A student’s cost for last semester at her community college was $2700. She spent $378 of that on books. What percent of last semester’s college costs was spent on books?

Example A family paid $26,250 as a down payment for a home. If this represents 15% of the price of the home, find the price of the home.

Percent of Decrease Amt of decrease = original amt – new amt Then write the quotient as a percent.

Example In reaction to a slow economy, the number of employees at a soup company decreased from 530 to 477. What was the percent decrease in the number of employees.

Example There are 1150 calories in a cup of whole milk and only 84 calories in a cup of skim milk. In switching to skim milk, find the percent decrease in number of calories per cup.

Percent of Increase Amt of Increase = new amt – original amt % of Increase = amt of increase / original amt Then write the quotient as a percent.

Example In 2010, approximately 493 thousand correctional officers were employed in the US. By 2020, this number is expected to increase to 518 thousand correctional officers. What is the percent increase?

Example From 2013-2014 to 2020-2021, the number of associate degrees awarded is projected to increase by 17.4%. If the number of associates degrees awarded in 2013-2014 was 943,000, find the increase and the projected number of associates degrees awarded in the 2020-2021 school year.
