3 Ways to be Successful FIRST Pass the class with a B – or better. Externship evaluations totaling a B – or better. Take the State required exams.

SECOND Pass the class with a B – or better. Externship evaluations totaling a B – or better. Pass the State required exams with an 80% average or better. This will earn the Utah Endorsed Medical Assistant Certificate.

THIRD Pass the class with a B – or better. Externship evaluations totaling a B – or better. Pass the State required exams with a B – or better Take the National Certification exam. You MUST earn the UEMA Certificate to qualify for this exam. Passing this exam with 70% or better will earn the National Certified Medical Assistant Certificate. This exam is optional, but passing allows you to work anywhere in the nation.

IMPORTANT DATES 2018-2019 Externships Attendance is ESSENTIAL! EVENT EXPLANATION September 7 Immunizations Due   - Students may NOT apply for externship without immunizations being completed  - 200 point assignment. 25 extra credit points if turned in earlier than due date. March 4– May 18 Externships Students are excused from class 4 days per week in order to complete 160 hours of externship. March 5, 12, 19, 26 April 2, 4, 9, 12, 23, 30 May 7, 14, Back to class on 20th Required classroom dates during externship Students are required to attend class on Tuesdays, except Apr. 12 That is a Friday because of Spring Break. Attendance is ESSENTIAL! April 24 – May 26 End of year State and National Testing April 2 – MA Post Test April 9 – Advanced Health Science Test April 30 – State Clinical Laboratory Test May 7 – State Administrative Test May 14 – State Anatomy and Physiology Test May 23 – National Certification Test (NCMA)

Frequently Asked Questions 1. Q: Do I need to purchase a blood pressure kit if I already have one? A: No, if you have a pressure cuff and a stethoscope, you are good. Q: If I have a Medical Terminology book, do I need to purchase another? A: No, your access code is good for two med term classes. 3. Q: If I am CPR and First Aid Certified, do I need to do it again? A: Yes. Certification will be in January, so you will be current until January 2021. Q: If I know someone at the UofU or Intermountain, can I arrange my own externship with them? A: No - All externships with UofU and IHC, need to be arranged through me. U of U and Intermountain ask that you not contact anyone at their work to arrange an externship. If you have a friend/neighbor/relative, you may speak to them off work hours, then give me the information, and I will arrange it through my liason.

Q: I am planning a vacation. When is the best time to miss class. Q: Why do I need to find my own externship if you have contracts with the U and Intermountain? A: The U and Intermountain can only accommodate a total of about 20 students, as they work with other MA programs as well. We submit applications, and they decide which students will be offered positions. Q: I am planning a vacation. When is the best time to miss class. A: There are breaks built in the school schedule. These are the best times. Please MAKE EVERY EFFORT to be here when class is in session. We have A LOT of material to cover. (FUN – but A LOT!) Q: I am squeamish about body fluids and needles. Am I really required to provide blood and urine samples, receive injections and let someone draw my blood? A: Yup, it’s the real deal. You are required to perform the tests, and have the tests performed on you. Most students overcome their fear and do really well. And don’t worry – we are very modest - but if this is a HUGE issue for you, it is probably best to drop the class.

Where Do I Start? 1. IMMUNIZATIONS!! – I seriously beg of you to get started now. It will take some time to finish. Fill out online forms. They are ready for you now. Pay fees. The system will be ready to accept payment the week before school starts. You can pay online (through Skyward) or in the office with cash. Checks are no longer accepted. Please note that breakfast and lunch are served at the JATC. Just use your regular lunch number, and it will be deducted from your account as usual.
