An InsPEELA Calls Point = J.B. Priestly uses [TECHNIQUE] to… THEMES Socialism = Everybody should take care of each other, and share the wealth Capitalism = Every man takes care of himself, and only the rich have control over money Gender = Patriarchy (men are better than women) Responsibility = Who are we responsible for? Who is responsible for our actions? Guilt/blame = Who is guilty in the death of Eva Smith? Who is to blame? Social Hierarchy = The rich are the most powerful and at the very top, the poor are at the bottom Point = J.B. Priestly uses [TECHNIQUE] to… Evidence = This can be seen when [CHARACTER] says/asks… Explanation = What does the line reveal about the character/topic? Why is it important? What themes does it relate to? Language = What techniques are used, and why? What are the most important words in the evidence? What do they connote, and how are they relate to the question? Audience = How would an audience in 1945 respond to the line? Why? Would an audience in 2017 respond differently or similarly to the line? CONTEXT The play was written in 1945 by J.B. Priestly, a socialist playwright. He uses the Inspector to present his own opinions about the rich and the poor. After World War 2 (1939-45), England elected a Socialist party to lead the country. The play is set in 1912, two years before World War 1, when capitalism was controlling the money Women were looked at as less powerful than men Rich people employed poor people in factories, and the poor people went on strikes to get more money
