Environmental Awareness IB HL

People Involved Gerald Durrell: Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Groups: Greenpeace and the WWF. Politicians and Scientists: Al Gore and Dian Fossey.

The Conflict Economic Development Vs. Environmental Conservation and Management. There is a need for strategic thinking and planning. This needs to be sustainable.

Role Of Greenpeace An international environmental organisation founded in Vancouver, Canada in 1971. Tackles issues such as waste disposal, deforestation, nuclear power, harvesting of seal cubs and industrial pollution. Greenpeace’s goal is “to ensure the continuing ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity” Greenpeace exists in over 40 countries.

Greenpeace’s Main Interests Stopping climate change. Preserving oceans. Saving ancient forests. Campaigning for peace and nuclear disarmament. Promoting sustainable farming. Eliminating toxic chemicals.

The WWF Includes all aspects of nature conservation (as in the past the WWF was mainly concerned with endangered species). Has over 5 million supporters globally. Increasingly concerned with environmental destruction. The WWF is interested in climate change, global warming, freshwater ecosystems, marine ecosystems, species and diversity, sustainability, agriculture, toxins, trade and investment.

Activities Using Geography For The IB Diploma P125-127, answer the following… What did Greenpeace first protest against? What does Greenpeace’s tradition of “bearing witness” mean? What 6 things are Greenpeace trying to improve? How has Greenpeace’s actions been criticised?

Activities Using Geography Course Companion P362-363, answer the following… How have Greenpeace and the WWF improved environmental management? What are the aims of these 2 groups?
