A POCKET GUIDE TO PUBLIC SPEAKING 3rd Edition Section(s) 33 and 34 Team, Business & Professional Presentations

Team Presentations Designate a team leader to map out a strategy for completing the presentation requirements Assign roles and tasks Establish a consistent format between different individual components and technical elements Create transitions between speakers Rehearse the presentation until it proceeds slowly Practice potential question and answer sessions

Business & Professional Presentations Require many of the skills used in public speaking; however the audience size, audience experience, and occasion impact the way in which one presents May be given by an individual or a group Include sales presentations, proposals, staff reports, progress reports, and crisis-response presentations

Sales Presentations Attempt to persuade a potential buyer to purchase a service or product described by the speaker. Often uses Monroe’s Motivated Sequence to organize the presentation. Requires excellent listening skills and impromptu critical thinking to adapt presentation to meet the needs of individual clients.

Proposals Organizations continually make decisions about modifying or adopting current products, procedures, services, or policies. Information about the possibilities is usually made by proposals which are informative in nature. The presenter may advocate for a particular solution, but the main goal is to provide accurate information about all possible options.

Staff Reports Inform employees of new developments that will affect them or their work. Inform staff of plans for completing tasks. State needs for the company or may charge a committee to research the issue further.

Progress Reports Keep the organization up to date on the status of projects. Include description of personnel involved, their duties, and time spent on tasks. Review supplies used, costs incurred, and income. Discuss problems which occurred and handling. Estimate tasks to be completed before next reporting period.

Crisis-Response Presentations Reassure members of the organization or public that the crisis will be adverted. Restore faith in the organization. Reestablish credibility lost by any negligence that may have caused the crisis to occur. Reveal plans of action to meet human needs injured by the crisis.
