Lesson 2 August 25th, 2010 Why Exercise?

Questions: From yesterday -take up and hand in How might a physical health problem such as a disease, affect the other components of your health? Why is self esteem so important to overall health? How can being physically fit improve self esteem List the people you use for social support, List two things you could do to improve you position on the health-illness continuum.

Why Exercise? Exercise Physical activity that consists of a regular series of activities to train and strengthen the body.

The Benefits of Exercise Physical Benefits All body systems from regular physical activity, including exercise. Non-formal physical activity is also beneficial. Exercise helps to maintain proper body composition. The division of total body weight into fat weight and fat-free weight which includes bone and muscle Tissues get stronger and remain elastic Maintain flexibility

The Benefits of Exercise Physical Benefits Risk for heart attack and stroke becomes lower. A stronger core helps to prevent lower back injury. Strengthens bones – helps prevent osteoporosis Reduces risk of diabetes Improves immune system – disease prevention Regular sweating helps the skin remove wastes.

Mental Benefits Knowing you are improving your physical fitness is satisfying Improves mood Can release endorphins which make you feel better A substance produced inside the brain that has pain-killing effects Relaxed muscles eases anxiety More restful sleeps

What is physical Fitness? The ability to perform daily tasks vigorously and to perform physical activities while avoiding diseases related to a lack of activity. 4 categories

1. Aerobic Fitness Increases heart rate Use large muscles in a continuous manner for at least 10 min Ex: walking, jogging, basketball, soccer. Improves cardiovascular health

2. Muscular Strength and Endurance Muscular strength = the amount of force you can generate with your muscles Muscular endurance = the amount of force you can generate for an extended period of time. To increase endurance and strength you must stress your muscles.

3. Flexibility The ability to fully use major joints Decreases with age Can improve performance and decrease the risk of injury

4. Body Composition Aerobic activity decreases body fat Resistance training increases muscle mass and bone density

What are some physical changes resulting from regular, moderate exercise that you can’t see? 5. a. What effect do endorphins have on your body? b.
