The Digestive System The digestive system has 3 main functions: It breaks down food into particles that the body can use. It absorbs nutrients into the blood. It eliminates waste from the body. Mouth Esophagus

The Digestive System Digestion can happen in two ways: Mechanical digestion: foods are physically broken down into smaller parts (like by teeth). Chemical digestion: Chemicals called ENZYMES break foods into their smaller “building blocks” (for example, starch gets broken down into sugar). Mouth Esophagus

Excretory system Kidneys Ureters Bladder Urethra Blood vessels (in and out) Kidneys = bean shaped, made of millions of nephrons to filter, take trash and a little water, good stuff is kept Kidneys Ureters = two tubes…one from each kidney to the bladder Ureters Bladder = holding pouch for urine (waste products and water) Bladder Urethra Urethra = tube from bladder to the outside of the body.

Main Function: The system of the body that collects waste produced by cells and removes the wastes from the body. (also known as: excretion)

Analyzing signs of disease… Doctors will dip a strip of paper into urine to test for the presence of glucose and protein. The presence of Glucose = diabetes The presence of Protein = kidneys not functioning correctly

Homeostasis with Excretion Excretion maintains homeostasis by keeping the body’s internal environment stable and free of harmful levels of chemicals. Kidneys Lungs and Skin Liver

Homeostasis Kidneys Regulate amount of water in your body Hot day – you will sweat a lot, but you don’t drink a lot so you excrete small amounts of urine

Homeostasis Lungs and Skin Exhale carbon dioxide and water vapor Sweat water and urea Liver Breaks down wastes before excreting them

The Circulatory System The circulatory, or cardiovascular, system is made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. In one day, human hearts beat about 100,000 times and pump around 1,500 gallons of blood! Whew! I’m tired!

What does it do for us? Our circulatory system… Delivers necessary materials (like oxygen and sugar) to the entire body in the blood, Removes waste products from cells, and Helps fight disease by transporting immune cells in the blood.

Write in the margin! How does it move stuff? Your blood travels in two main loops: From the heart to the lungs and back, and From the heart to the body and back. Write in the margin! This part isn’t on the worksheet – but they can add it to their notes by putting it in the margin.

What carries the blood? BLOOD VESSELS are the hollow tubes that carry your blood around your body. There are 3 TYPES: ARTERIES CAPILLARIES VEINS

What carries the blood? Arteries carry blood away from the heart. They are very thick, and have strong, muscular walls to withstand the pressure created by the heart.

What carries the blood? Capillaries are tiny vessels that run through your body tissue. They are very thin to allow oxygen and waste to pass between the vessels and your cells.

What carries the blood? Veins carry blood back to the heart. They have thinner walls than the arteries because there is not as much pressure from the heart.

What is your blood? Blood is not one single substance – it is a mix of liquid and cells. The liquid part of blood is called plasma. It is mostly water. The rest of the blood is made of three types of cells.

What is your blood? Red Blood Cells carry oxygen. White blood cells fight disease. Platelets form blood clots to stop you from bleeding too much.
