Covalently Bonded Compounds

Covalently Bonded Substances Atoms share electrons by overlapping electron clouds to obtain the octet electron configuration Example: H2O CO2

Covalently Bonded Substances Usually formed between nonmetals Polyatomic ions are held together by covalent bonds Example O-H–1, NH4+1

How to write binary covalent formulas!! THERE ARE NO CHARGES TO WRITE OR CRISS CROSS The Subscripts of formula of each element are indicated in the name by Greek prefixes

1 = mono 2 = di 3 = tri 4 = tetra 5 = penta 6 = hexa Prefixes 1 = mono 2 = di 3 = tri 4 = tetra 5 = penta 6 = hexa 7 = hepta 8 = octa 9 = nano 10 = deca

P O P2O5 2 5 The Two Step Process Write the parts DIPHOSHORUS PENTOXIDE Write the parts Use Prefixes as subscripts DO NOT REDUCE OR USE PARENTHESIS P O 2 5 P2O5

First Part gets normal name with prefix, except for mono Second Part gets prefix and –ide ending!!!

Trinitrogen Pentaphosphide EXAMPLES CO2 Carbon Dioxide N3P5 Trinitrogen Pentaphosphide

Trinitrogen heptafluoride 3 7 Trinitrogen heptafluoride
